The Chesapeake-Ohio Canal in Georgetown, Washington, DC, is a treasure trove of history, but like any aging structure, it faces challenges from time and the elements. One of the stone masonry retaining walls, critical for supporting the buildings along the periphery of the canal, began to show signs of distress. Bowing or bulging hinted at soil pressure and years of wear, necessitating a stabilization effort to preserve the canal’s integrity. Soil nailing, a modern technique that reinforces existing structures, was chosen for this delicate task.
Schnabel Engineering is shown in pictures on the process of installing soil nails to stabilize centuries old stone masonry retaining wall along with other canal restoration projects going on simultaneously. The retaining wall, situated within the canal itself, posed logistical hurdles that required creative problem-solving. Temporary bracing was erected to stabilize the retaining wall and also ensuring it remained secure during the construction process.
With the site prepared, the crew began the meticulous process of soil nailing. Drilling 30 feet into the soil behind the wall, they created a grid of horizontal holes designed to distribute load evenly. Precision was key, especially given the tight working conditions within the canal. Once the holes were drilled, a high-strength grout was injected, bonding the surrounding soil and creating a firm anchor for the nails. Corrosion-resistant steel nails were then installed, providing tensile strength and stabilizing the structure.
Working within the canal’s unique constraints wasn’t without its challenges. Isolating the work area with coffer dams and maintaining stability with temporary bracing required careful planning and execution. Environmental concerns also played a significant role, with measures taken to minimize disruption to the surrounding ecosystem, Rock Creek being the end of the canal, and comply with DOEE regulations.
The soil nailing effort on the Chesapeake-Ohio Canal is a testament to the power of modern engineering to preserve history. By combining innovative techniques with respect for the past, civil engineers deliver solution that not only stabilizes the structure but also honors the legacy of this iconic landmark.
